Chlär – Topography EP

Label: Mote-Evolver
Genre: Deep Techno, Hypnotic Techno, Dub Techno
Swiss-born, Berlin-based Chlär returns with the Topography EP on Mote-Evolver, marking a decisive step in his evolution following 2024’s debut album The Architects of Shadows. Here, he aligns seamlessly with Luke Slater’s venerated imprint, offering four meticulously crafted cuts that lean into the label’s legacy of forward-thinking, groove-driven techno.
“Altitude” sets the tone with precision hypnosis: rolling low-end propulsion meets eerie synthetic fauna—an aural terrain where minimalism and menace quietly co-exist. “Serac” edges deeper still, with a glacial pulse and agile bassline architecture that subtly morphs over time, inviting dancers into its tight internal logic. The B-side opens with “Lamina”, a dub-influenced track where haunted vocal traces and cavernous reverb interplay over restrained yet potent rhythms—a masterclass in tension and texture. Final cut “Phantom Grid” escalates energy levels, driven by kinetic claps and a percussive murk that evokes peak-time delirium without losing focus.
The artwork mirrors the EP’s intent: minimal but suggestive, evoking terrains both physical and psychological. Topography not only reinforces Chlär’s identity—precise, textural, and deeply physical—but also adds to Mote-Evolver’s storied catalogue of techno built for both mind and body.
